Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) is an injury to the brain that has occurred after birth, which results in any combination of focal and diffuse central nervous system dysfunction, both immediate and/or delayed at the brain stem level and above. This dysfunction of the central nervous system is acquired through the interaction of any external force and the body including blows to the head and violent movements of the body – Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI); as well as through oxygen deprivation; infection; toxicity; surgery; and vascular disorders not associated with aging. This dysfunction is not congenital, developmental or degenerative.

ABI may be caused by trauma or injury to the head; also called Traumatic Brain Injury. TBI occurs when brain function is altered by an external force. This happens when something strikes the head or when the head hits something as the result of a fall, motor vehicle accident, assault, and more. There are other different causes of TBI which include, stroke, drugs, alcohol or poisons not getting enough oxygen to the brain for an extended time (for example, a near-drowning) infection, tumors degenerative brain conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease or some other form of dementia.
